Caroline Herring's fourth album Golden Apples of the Sun is her most intimate and mature to date. Orlando, FL --- Creed, one of the most successful rock bands of the past decade, has announced all four of the original band members are back together for a summer tour and new album. Since their formation, Creed has sold close to thirty-five million albums and millions of concert tickets.

I am a long time Creed fan (I had MOP the day it released, and every subsequent album- I've seen Creed in concert 3 times). I was really disappointed when Stapp and Creed broke up. Then I saw the reunion announcement, and I was excited to hear the "new sound", and couldn't wait to buy the album. Let me tell you, if you like Creed, this is a must have for your music library. This is not Alter-Bridge- it's distinctly Creed, but a different Creed than on "Human Clay" (Which I also enjoyed). It seems they have found some sac again and anted up with some sweet rock attitude.

Stapp's lyrics are as inwardly reflective as usual - however, I think he uses more of his voice range in this album vs. past efforts. Tremonti comes through and delivers some raging guitar and tasty licks. Howard Benson's producing is again top-notch...you can definitely feel it's a Benson album straight away.

While I'm not a huge fan of "Bread of Shame" (and yes, I like my rock to rock hard), the rest of the album is quality music. I was pleased to hear more acoustic guitar, and even happier to hear the volume of Stapp's voice nicely matched with Tremonti's guitar. After all, what makes rock rock is a rebellious Strat (or in this case, PRS) cranked up to 11 and screaming.

In short, if your looking for more "Arms Wide Open", you might want to take a pass. If you liked "Bullets", this one will stay in your CD changer for awhile. I know it'll be in mine.

I saw this 1959 cover on another site devoted to the best or weirdest LP album covers. I suspect that resurrecting these old albums with their original art would result in a cult following.
I admit that I bought this solely for the album cover (Amazon has turned me into an album art junkie to the point that I will only buy Amazon digital albums and have attached covers from Amazon to my huge, downloaded cd collection..and discovered a couple of root kits along the way, but that's another story and reason I gave up on cds). The cover is humorous and as uniquely Dean Martin as the songs in this album. But reviews should be about the music and this album is wonderful. Not every song is about Christmas, but they all follow the same winter theme. No singer has ever transmitted a twinkle in the eye through his voice and style as well as Dean Martin. I love this album.

Now the question... WHY? Why should one album by a band back in 1973 have such outstanding achievments and admiration even today? Perhaps because of the time period. Look at other albums released the same year by bands like Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, Rush, and the Doobie Brothers among several others. This was the year of rock perfection. Or maybe it was because of the rave for concept albums. Or the simple, yet unforgettable album cover.

More likely it was the band's chemistry and ability to make jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring, thought-provoking music. This is Pink Floyd at its collective finest, with everyone contributing. Unlike the band in 6 years, Waters did NOT do everything. Gilmoure took a huge chunk of the music-writing, laying down the chord progressions on "Breathe," "Time," and "Any Colour You Like;" the singing on the album's best songs, Water's conceeding to David's far superior voice; and pumping out what would later be hailed as some of rock's most influential lead-guitar riffs on "Money" and "Brain Damage." Wright got in on much of the writing as well with his keyboard contributions on "Breathe," the symphonic "Great Gig in the Sky," "Us and Them," and the amazing keybpard licks and effects on "Colour." Mason, who rarely contributed, put in his efforts on "Speak to Me," "Time," and the Waters-less "Colour." Finally, Roger Waters put down most of the album's music, laid down all the bass-lines as usual, thought up the album's concept, and wrote all the lyrics. If that's not enough, he made himself heard on "Brain Damage," "Eclipse," and the chorus of "Time." Anyway you put it, THIS is the true Pink Floyd; all contributing, all acknowledged.

The band's titanic success was continued on later albums like 1975's "Wish You Were Here," 1977's "Animals," and 1979's "The Wall," although by that time the band had begun to fall apart from Waters' power obsession. By 1983, the band had slipped to a Water's-solo-project version of itself, with "The Final Cut," and finally a break-up. But never would the band see the success or experience the musical genious of "Dark Side of the Moon." So pop this in, take another listen, and remember- even if you don't believe the hype- after this album, music would never be the same....

Ella is perfection. This pairing of Ella and Christmas is beyond wonderful! My parents had one of those old compilation Christmas albums from the 70's (you know, the kind you could get really cheap at hardware and tire stores around the holidays)and it had Ella'sElla version of Sleigh Ride on it. That was my first introduction to . I was hooked, and I've become a life-long fan.

When this CD originally came out in the early 90's, I bought it and fell in love with Ella all over again. Then, when it was remastered and beefed up with extra tracks a few years ago, I bought it again. And I still love every minute of it. (My personal favorite is the laid-back jazz version of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. It's much less depressing than the standard take that other singers have given us.)

A word about the "Alternate Takes" at the end of the CD: With the exception of Frosty, these are completely different recordings from the ones on the original album. The alternate versions of The Christmas Song and White Christmas were recorded at a different time with a different orchestra. The arrangements make a nice companion to the versions found on the original album, but they aren't simply "Alternate Takes" from the same recording session. Personally, I like hearing Ella sing the same song with completely different arrangements.

And then there's the alternate Frosty. Yes, it is annoying. But if you know a little about Ella, you know she had a great sense of humor and she loved kids. This wasn't the first time she sang in her "little girl" voice, and I'm sure it wasn't the last. Although it's not my favorite, taken in context I think it's a truly wonderful gem. And if a 6-year-old kid hears her singing Frosty and becomes a life-long fan, then it's definitely worth it to have this version included!

I have a fairly extensive collection of classical music, and Christmas music as well. This compilation, featuring mostly little known groups, is charming. Yes, one can find better performances of many of these works, but that quest is only for the obsessive audiophile. The choral works are recorded clearly. One problem I've often had with recording by excellent groups such as the King's College Choir is that they sound like they were recorded in a cathedral (and perhaps they were) so there is a lot of music and enunciation lost in the reverberation. There are a few instances where I wish the tempos were faster, but on the other hand this is a set to listen to while relaxing around the fire. A nice bonus -- the music from the Nutcracker features lots of the lesser known (but still beautiful) tunes, not just the ones one normally hears in a suite. And the inclusion of the more serious classical pieces by Bach, Corelli, etc., is fitting and a great addition.
I have lots of vocal, jazzy, and acoustic holiday tunes, but not a lot of serious classical recordings. This is a great collection at a great price
I stumbled on this collection and decided I would give it a try. I love it! There are songs for everyone. It's great background music for a Christmas party and it includes so many wonderful carols. Perfect for when you get tired of hearing the same old songs on the radio.

I imagine 'Stronger With Each Tear' is going to be an album that people either love or hate, leaving not much room for the middle ground. On the one hand, when placed in Blige's catalog, this album seems necessary or expected; it continues where the last album, 'Growing Pains', ended with Blige seeming more confident, secure and happier than ever. As a stand-alone album though, it doesn't seem to measure up to her past work. Upon the first listen, this was the first album of Blige's that I wasn't impressed with and moved by. It doesn't have the gut-wrenching angst, sadness and anger of her earlier albums or even that of 'Breakthrough' or 'Growing Pains'. The past albums all started off with a bang even with the first track. For this album though, it takes a few tracks for the album to find its legs. That being said, this is a good album but it certainly isn't Blige at her absolute best.

The Good: After two albums that felt somewhat similar style and sequencing wise, 'Stronger With Each Tear' feels like Blige's move in a new direction musically. There aren't as many ballads or deep, depressing tracks and instead, she seems more bent on finding her groove with hip-hop and dance tracks like "The One", featuring Blige's voice manipulated by auto-tune and a dancefloor-ready beat accompanied by hand-claps and an appearance by rapper Drake. A piano and string-backed "Hood Love" is catchy and soothing and has Blige singing of love and devotion rather than her usual theme of heartbreak and angst. "I Am" is this album's version of "Be Without You"; it's very mainstream, hip-hop but pop at the same time and (in my opinion) is Blige at her absolute best musically and vocal wise on the album. Blige also takes a few chances, deviating from her usual musical path by including a track that is rather fun with silly lyrics but again, features a more confident Blige who's giving a warning to a woman coming after her man. "Each Tear" may have a title that screams of ballad and makes you think of Blige's emotional singing but it's a stark turnaround; instead, it's an uplifting, inspiring song about learning from your heart ache. There's a wide range of music and styles featured on 'Stronger With Each Tear', probably the first album from Blige in a while where she's sticking to a theme but allows the music to vary and evolve for each track rather than fit into a specific sound and style for the entire album.

The Bad: What brings the album down is that no track really rises to the level of Blige's biggest hits or her vocal abilities. In some ways, this album felt a bit tame and reserved. I kept waiting for her to let go and really dive into a song with heart, soul and raw emotion as she did with "No More Drama", "We Ride", "As" or even the last album's "What Love Is." She doesn't really have a track like that on the album, though "In the Morning" and "I Can See In Color" come somewhat close. Some of the tracks are decent, but they seem a bit beneath her after all she's accomplished musically in the past few years. The collaborations seem a bit much; you have Trey Songz, T.I. and Drake somewhat taking over some of the songs they're featured on. It's fine, but unlike the past albums, this one is shorter so it felt as if the listener is being cheated out of a real Mary J Blige experience. There are more than a few tracks that just seem okay or average and felt like filler or skip-worthy after one listen including "I Love U", "Said And Done" and "Tonight." It took a few listens for me to pick up on the theme of the music and lyrics but the album sounds as if it was somewhat rushed for the sake of getting it out before the holiday season.

In all, the album is average, not Mary J Blige at her absolute best. Yes, style-wise it's different from her past few albums and she somewhat goes back to her roots with a few hip-hop tracks but still, even after a few listens I can't help but to feel like there's something missing. Something, by the end of the album, feels unfinished, or unrealized and leaves you as a listener with an unsatisfied feeling.

January 21st 2009 is not a date that Susan Boyle is ever likely to forget. ‘I will never forget it,’ she clarifies, in her unmistakeably Celtic brogue. It was the day that the shy, devout 48 year old stepped onto the stage of the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow for an audition on Britain’s Got Talent. Or to put it another way, the day her world turned 360 degrees on its head. In front of the three-strong panel of judges charged with divining which of this year’s British hopefuls really did have talent, the singing voice of Susan Boyle turned out to be a watershed moment neither she nor anyone involved in the show could possibly have foreseen. It is now both her and the show’s defining moment.

In her own haphazard fashion, during three and a half minutes of television airtime, later aired to slack-jawed intakes of breath in May of this year, Susan Boyle fashioned a new kind of fame. She elicited a moment of pure, molten zeitgeist. She broke every rule of the talent show book and tore up a considerable number of the pages of popular music marketing into the bargain. She symbolized an astonishing variety of the little-people’s revenge, quite by accident. Ms Boyle describes her own astonishing 2009 in refreshingly frank and simple terms. ‘All I did was to apply for a talent show. I was lucky enough to be chosen. That’s it in a nutshell.’ But something deeper was going on in the collective public consciousness. After her one audition for Britain’s Got Talent, in which she confounded the judges, the audience and then anyone with access to Youtube’s expectations by dazzling her way through a version of the song I Dreamed A Dream, from the musical Les Miserables, a tornado of opinionated column inches, speculation, rumination and conjecture around Susan Boyle grew feverishly. 300 Million You Tube hits and counting. She became the subject of op-ed newspaper columns, a front cover sensation in her own right. This unlikely candidate for the melting pot of the new star machine in 21st century Britain caused computer crashes, miles of newsprint and the sophisticated approval of Hollywood’s well-heeled and super-groomed A-list. Though the content differed wildly, everyone proffering their thoughts on the self-confessed ‘wee wifey’ seemed agreed on one point. That in 2009, to be free of an opinion on Susan Boyle was to be free of opinion itself.

For one brief moment, vanity itself collapsed. As that ancient old maxim – ‘Never judge a book by its cover’ – clanked around the globe with speedy viral intensity, it was as if the world was about to offer its first unspoken apology for prizing beauty above all else. Perhaps it would temporarily forget its grotesquely accentuated new heights of judgement. Or perhaps Susan Boyle was just a fleeting icon by which a microscope was shone on our more fickle presumptions. Whatever history gifts the Susan Boyle story in the long term, it is now her time to prove that there is more to this incredible woman than being the symbol for a moment of international reflection. She will do it in the exact same way she entered our consciousness in the first place. With the raw combination of strength and fragility, beauty and solitude that is her singing voice.

In some ways, Ms Boyle’s story is just the same as any woman with a voice in any choir up and down the UK. In her home town of Blackburn, she had been schooled in singing in churches and choral societies. She says now that, as a shy young woman with some learning difficulties, being hidden in the blanket of a collective singing arrangement offered her comfort. So in one other, crucial way, her story is entirely her own. The most unlikely chorister in the sea of voices stepped out of line and put her head above the parapet to be noticed. For Susan Boyle, though she would never deign to say so much herself, this was an act of personal heroism, the like of which she had never contemplated before.

The speed with which reaction to her performance picked up gravitas proved an incendiary media hotbed. But it was most surprising for the woman at the centre of it. ‘It started off with the [Scottish newspaper] Daily Record visiting my door. And it ended up with TV stations from all over the world camping out on my street waiting for interviews and stories. I’d peak behind the curtains in the house, saying ‘what in God’s name is going on here?’ Then the phone calls started. My number was still in the book at that particular time, so anybody could get it and the phone was ringing 24 hours a day. It was constant. People were ringing me who I couldn’t understand because of their accents. All sorts of nationalities. Lots of Americans. It was absolutely unbelievable if I’m being honest.’ She is self-deprecating about why she should have caused such a furore. ‘A woman who went on with mad hair, bushy eyebrows and the frock I was wearing had to be noticed. Come on!’

Such is the quick nature of today’s star system, in September, just four months after her TV debut, Susan Boyle made her live TV comeback. She performed a rarefied take on The Rolling Stones Wild Horses, re-orchestrated to gently clasp the exact timbre of her natural talent, on the show’s US cousin, America’s Got Talent. An unprompted standing ovation followed. Outside of the unruly cyclone of her fame, there is something within the voice of Susan Boyle that is absolutely perfect for our times. At a moment when Dame Vera Lynn and Barbra Streisand are topping the album charts, there is something peculiarly modern about her improbably status as holding the international record for most pre-ordered album of all time. As the dust settles on the sheer wattage of conversation that she has prompted, it is time – as they say – to face the music.

Ms Boyle’s debut album was put together during the summer of this year. She first entered a recording studio in July in Edinburgh, to test how her vocals would respond to tape. The results shocked both her and veteran producer Steve Mac. Decamping to London, she fashioned the record over two months, picking songs that resonated with her, that pricked something within that she felt ready to unleash through music. ‘It was important that I could feel everything I was singing,’ she says, cutting straight to the core of why music can be such a useful release, an escape valve from the everyday.

Lincoln Brewster is one of the great Christian guitarist! He expanded his sound to included a wider variety of styles from the past. "God You Reign" is one of the bluesy worship songs on his new CD with an Eric Clapton (slow hand) type guitar solo at the end. I haven't had time to learn the song yet, but after my first listen the Chords for the verse: D Em and it repeats... Chorus: G Bm A G D. A good melodic worship/ sing along song similar to his earlier song Surrender. Lincoln uses a similar riff on two songs on this CD. This is only a rough draft:

God You Reign is an atypical Lincoln Brewster song loaded with talent. Today is the Day CD is not the typical Brewster CD because it has a greater variety of styles. Lincoln's solos are a blend of Clapton, Santana, and one solo sounds very similar to Stevie R. Vaughn style. There's a hint of a Becker Brother's horn riff on another song. I great Cd even if you're not a guitarist.

Since the review I'd written 2 yrs. ago of this Sinatra holiday album mysteriously vanished, I feel compelled now, early August, to write a new one. I own a pretty big collection of cool yule albums, cassettes & cd's, and A Jolly Christmas from Frank Sinatra is easily in my top 10 faves. The opening tune, Jingle Bells, is the best I've ever heard-a fun, bouncy, swingin' tune that you just know Frank enjoyed recording. Who can resist hearing Frank, backed by the Ralph Brewster Singers, sing "I love those J-I-N-G-L-E BELLS-BONG-those holiday J-I-N-G-L-E BELLS-BONG!" Under the superb conducting of Gordon Jenkins(except for the last 2 cuts which were conducted by Nelson Riddle)the entire album takes you on an old fashioned holiday journey through traditional songs as well as beautiful hymns sung as only Frank can sing them. Even if you already own the classic yuletide albums by Bing, Perry, Johnny, Nat & Andy, your collection is not complete without this Sinatra holiday album. Very highly recommended!

I really, really wanted to write this one off. Especially after TTL, which for a long time I thought was a total disaster - and still think is a triple bogey at best. But sure enough, I found myself at 9:03 P.M California time downloading CITH off iTunes within the first three minutes of its release.

My first impression? So warm, so comforting, so nostalgic. And not just in a "it's getting to be late Fall, so let's get in the mood for Christmas" way. No, in a pure Americana kind of way. This is a Rockwell painting come to life, it is not some kind of ironic commentary on the past... it is a memorial to the past. Dylan does this perfectly. It baffles me, but I really think this will turn out to be one of his most memorable records.

Let me venture to say that this is also a vocal masterpiece. Forget those low-quality clips on amazon.com.. when you hear this the way Bob Frost intended it, you will curse yourself for ever cursing it.

And surprisingly, there are no real low points. It is just raw and perfect from "Here Comes Santa Claus" to "Little Town of Bethlehem." It makes you think of a bright, white, hopeful day. Logs on the fire, ancestors passed on, old dusty pictures that were never digitized. This feels like something old that turned up in a cross-country move. A brilliant, sharp, autumn feeling like those old first days of school.

2009 album from the Grammy Award winning Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer. SoulBook is a collection of classic '60s and '70s era Soul favorites sung by one of the most interpretive voices in music. Stewart is personally passionate about this project, which is a return to his beginnings when he fronted The Jeff Beck Band and the critically-revered band The Faces, iconic in the history books for fusing American roots music - Rock, Soul and Blues. Soulbook reunites Stewart with his longtime collaborators, producers Steve Tyrell and Steve Jordan, of Rolling Stones/Xpensive Winos fame, who also brought in top musicians Ray Parker Jr., Waddy Watchel, Darrell Jones, Dean Parks and David Paich to join Rod in the studio for the album.

Rod Stewart's 'Soulbook' is very similar to his Great American Songbook collection; rather than singing classic Rat Pack era songs, or 'rock' standards as with another recent release, this time he's taking on 'soul' hits; classic R&B hits. Sigh. Don't get me wrong, Stewart's voice and style is definitely present but an issue I have with 'Soulbook' is that similar to the American Songbook series, the song line-up really don't do anything for him. They sound like cover songs (which they are), as if he's just singing them without much thought or true feeling. After 13 tracks, my main complaint is that this doesn't feel anything like Rod Stewart. It feels like Rod Stewart's leaving behind the style, attitude and personality that made him so popular and the musical icon that he is and is settling for covering other artists' songs and standards. What 'Soulbook' lacks is the soul of Stewart. Yes, he sings each song decently well but there's always a feeling that there's something missing in each track and on the album on a whole.

The Good: His voice is probably the best part of the album. It's his signature, it's raspy and it fits this genre a bit better than it did the American Songbook collection of tracks. There's a big 1970s vibe to the album and the arrangements of many of the songs, from the instruments to the production, makes 'Soulbook' sound as if it fits into his early releases. Unlike with the past songbook collections, Stewart comes off a bit more comfortable in this genre and back in his element. I felt he was best on "Tracks of My Tears" which is a very laid back and stripped-down affair where his voice and sensuality and sensibility are on display, and "If You Don't Know Me By Now" that is purely a cover song but his voice and vocals just makes it stand out.

The Bad: The weakness of the album comes from the fact that Rod Stewart seems willing to sit back and ride on the coat tails of others' hits and songs rather than break ground and take on new and original material. The entire cover-artist thing was a fun departure for one CD, it was interesting for a second, but with this being the fifth release of 'standards' and cover songs (4 counting the American Songbook collection, plus the album of rock standards) ... this act feels tired and a bit uninspired. You can distinctly tell he's not fully attached to some songs in the way he is when he's performing songs that are completely his. There's a definite attempt of sticking to the original rather than completely experimenting and mixing it up a bit on the songs because they are such big standards and well-known songs. To me, it held him back as an artist. On another note, this felt like a rather sleepy, uninspired release. There's no real spark to it and it gives off a feeling that this was just another release of covers to stay out there and make money. While his past collaborations have been really special, the Jennifer Hudson and Mary J Blige duets just did nothing for me either. Again, part of the problem is that the arrangements and treatments to the songs are straight-forward covers and (to me) are not showcasing the best of this great solo artist.

In all, 'Soulbook' is average at best. Nothing new, far too reserved and safe. I hope at some point Stewart returns to purely original material with songs that he can truly put his stamp on rather than playing things so safe and relying on others' songs and hits to keep his career going. A bit disappointing but listenable.

Composer, singer, actor, activist - Sting has won universal acclaim in all these roles, but he defies easy labeling. He's best described as an adventurer, a risk-taker. A milkman's son from Newcastle, England, Sting was a teacher, soccer coach and ditchdigger before turning to music. Even though it includes some of the same songs, this isn't the Time-Life Christmas collection advertised annually on TV. It's actually a budget version of that anthology, and not a bad deal at all. Some may argue it's missing the two Elvis Presley tracks found on the three-CD TV version. Others will contend that any self-respecting Christmas music aficionado probably already owns (or should own) Elvis's wonderful '57 Christmas Album. What's attractive about this one is it gathers a lot of classic singular performances in one place--a tad too much Bing Crosby, perhaps, but also the original hit versions of "Jingle Bell Rock," Eartha Kitt's "Santa Baby," Burl Ives's "Holly Jolly Christmas," and the Drifters' "White Christmas" (the blueprint for Elvis's version). The title doesn't lie, even if it does sounds like a hyperbolic pitch from an old late-night cable TV ad. With 36 tracks of various genres spread over two discs, Now That's What I Call Christmas might be the best, most eclectic "value-plus" holiday record ever released, assuming your tastes embrace crooners such as Cole, Crosby, and Como, plus contemporary boy bands such as Boyz II Men, as well as the ubiquitous Britney Spears.

In between there are the sumptuous classics by Bobby Helms, Brenda Lee, the Beach Boys, Elvis, and Burl Ives on disc one, balanced on disc two by more recent standards, including Bruce Springsteen's live version of "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" and John and Yoko's "Happy Xmas (War is Over)." You're not obligated to like everything here, but that's why Santa invented the forward button on your CD player. --Martin Keller

Disc one features the original album masters of some of Michael's biggest hits such as "Billie Jean," "Smooth Criminal," "Human Nature," and "Thriller" arranged in the same sequence as they appear in the film. The disc ends with two versions of "This Is It," the original and an orchestral version. "This Is It" is featured in the film's closing sequence and includes backing vocals by Michael's brothers, the Jacksons.

Disc two offers fans a rare listen to the early demo versions of classics "She's Out Of My Life," "Wanna Be Startin'," "Somethin'," and "Beat It." This disc also features a recently discovered spoken word poem from Michael Jackson entitled "Planet Earth."

Michael Jackson's This Is It also includes a 36-page, commemorative booklet featuring exclusive photos of Michael from his last rehearsal.As a fan, I bought this 2 disc release with mixed feelings and it is with mixed feelings that I rate this 5 stars after listening to the album. I went straight to Disc 2 because I've already heard (and own many times over) the other tracks. I suspect MJ is turning in his grave knowing that this first posthumous release is really just a re-release of tracks to match the movie, almost taking advantage of his fans. However, as a fan, I'll likely buy anything that is released in his name after his death.

Having said that, I'm giving this 5 stars because of the demos. The $9.99 that I've spent is well worth what I've received listening to the demo of "Shes out of my life". It's the first time (aside from Speechless from the Invincible album) you get to hear MJ's voice in all it's purity. It's touching and it's searingly beautiful.

After listening to the "new" tracks (the demos and the poem), you're left with a sad realization that his life truly ended too soon.

They are back with their new release "Church Music" arguably their most innovative effort to date. Packed full with 17 full tracks, "It's our stimulus package," the frontman player jokes. "We're doing our part." The band hopes this album serves as a reminder of the continual evolvement of music within the Church.

One of David's favorite selections from "Church Music" is "God Almighty, None Compares," because he loves "the guitar harmony...the guitarmony, if you will, and shredding is involved, which always makes me smile." The band is rounded out by guitarists Jack Parker and Mark Waldorp , bassist Mike Dodson, drummer Jeremy Bush and electronic violinist Mike Hogan. For the epic "Eastern Hymn," which is the rest of the band's favorite song on the disc, David commissioned the translation of an ancient Chinese prayer book which he'd found last summer while the band was on the Passion World Tour, and portions of the translated tome appear in the song's chorus.

The album opens with "Phos Hilaron (Hail Gladdening Light)", which sets the tone for this excellent album, my top album of 2009 and my favorite overall album by this amazing band. If you liked "Illuminate", "A Collision" and "Remedy", then "Church Music" is for you. The album blends previous musical and lyrical styles with some new ethereal and ambient songs and an incredible cover of my favorite song of the year, "How He Loves". To add to the uniqueness of the album, the 17 songs on the album play continuously from beginning to end with one song blending into the next. In order to accomplish this, the band poured an immense amount of work into the process, sequencing the tracks before anything had been recorded so keys and tempos could be finalized. The result: 73 full minutes of music. "Alleluia Sing" is next and has that signature David Crowder*Band praise and worship style similar to "Open Skies". "The Nearness" and "Shadows" bring back the electronic feel from "Remedy" like "Everything Glorious" and "Can You Feel It?". "Eastern Hymn" is truly epic and flows beautifully into the next few tracks "SMS (Shine)", "The Veil" and "We Are Loved". This section reminded me of the brilliant section of "A Collision" from "Do Not Move" to "Our Happy Home".

The band even tackles a cover on the disc that has to be heard to be believed: Flyleaf's "All Around Me." As if the album wasn't impressive already, David Crowder*Band's beautiful cover of "How He Loves", originally written and recorded by John Mark McMillan, is spectacular. The band finds a unique balance of capturing the sweet lyrical moments of the song but continually crescendos the intensity of the song and the message as the simple chorus builds over and over again. The genuine sound of the song reminds us of the simplicity yet magnanimity of God's love for us. "Can I Lie Here" and "Birmingham (We Are Safe)" bridge to the final section of the album in the style of "...neverending..." and "Rain Down" before the title track "Church Music (Dance)", one of the most fun tracks on the album. I can't wait to see this song performed live as it has an electronic feel that will remind you of a 1970's disco. The album closes with an amazing section from the unashamed praise of "What A Miracle", and "Oh Happiness", which reminded me of "We Win!", the guitar-shredding of "God Almighty, None Compares" and the epic closer "In The End (O Resplendent Light)".

This is my favorite overall album by David Crowder*Band and my top album of 2009. For me, this is truly a 5 star album! My favorite songs are "Alleluia Sing", "The Nearness", "Eastern Hymn", "All Around Me", "Church Music (Dance)", "God Almighty, None Compares" and my song of the year "How He Loves".

It has been 3 years since Midnight Syndicate's last CD of all new material (not counting the soundtrack to THE RAGE released earlier this year). One might ask after such a long "hiatus" if the band has still got it. With CEMETERY GATES, the answer is a resounding YES!!!

CEMETERY GATES starts out a little differently than most of Midnight Syndicate's previous releases. Whereas many of them begin with a "prelude" of sorts, a kind of creepy, drone-like intro that builds to a climax, CEMETERY GATES' opening track ("Cathedral Ruins") is quite the opposite and comes out swinging. For me, it conjured up images of a chase through a cemetery, past the catacombs, tombstones... hiding behind a mausoleum. Somebody else might envision something completely different, which is the beauty of a Midnight Syndicate album.

From there, Midnight Syndicate supplies the listener with the usual roller coaster ride of emotions throughout the CD. The title track sounds like a distant relative of "Eclipse" (from REALM OF SHADOWS/OUT OF THE DARKNESS). The bonus tracks offer up something a little different than previous CDs have... songs with actual lyrics. Apparently, these are songs that are actually featured in the movie THE DEAD MATTER. I'm not really a big fan of remixes, but the A.B.T. Remix of "Theme to 'The Dead Matter'" has really grown on me.

After listening to a new CD (by ANY artist), I often put in some of their previous CDs to compare the new material to the old stuff. This time, however, CEMETERY GATES has yet to leave my CD player. After listening to this album for the umpteenth time, I asked myself the following question... after 10 releases, how does Midnight Syndicate keep coming up with such great music? I may never know the answer, but as long as they keep making it, I'll keep listening.

The largely unsurprising soundtrack to Rob Zombie's "re-imagining" of John Carpenter's genre-defining Halloween rests on two major building blocks: snippets of dialogue from the new movie and classic 1970s rock track. Nothing surprising among the latter, which includes arena-rock classics such as Blue Oyster Cult’s "Don't Fear the Reaper, " Alice Cooper's "Only Women Bleed," and Kiss's "God of Thunder." The songs still sound great, of course; whether you need to hear them yet again is another matter. There are only two cues from Tyler Bates' score. Leave it to Rhino Records to come up with the best party music for Halloween rave-ups. In contrast to New Wave Halloween, this set of 10 tunes is aimed squarely at the family listening environment. "Monster Mash," sung by Bobby Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers, is a hoot decades after its origin. And Screamin' Jay Hawkins's "I Put a Spell on You" is aptly eerie, if not a tad funny in this setting--considering that "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" comes after and the Addams Family theme comes before. Whoa!!!!! Where did this come from? Without any hype or media attention, Sony has just released "The Essential Michael Jackson" (37 tracks, 157 min.), perhaps the ultimate Michael Jackson compilation.

CD 1 (20 tracks, 79 min.) cover the period up to and including the "Thriller" album, starting with the best known Jackson 5 singles such as "ABC" and "I Want You Back", then shifting to the Jacksons. It would have been better to include "State of Shock" or "Lovely One" instead of "Enjoy Yourself". CD1 finishes off with 7 of the 9 "Thriller" album tracks (the other 2 being "Baby Be Mine" and "The Lady in My Life"; it's still hard to believe how successfull that album really was, and how many hits were relased from it, in the days when "radio tracks" meant actual vinyl single releases). This was of course Michael at his absolute best, now 23 years ago.

CD2 (17 tracks, 78 min.) compiles 8 tracks from "Bad" and 7 from "Dangerous", and finishes off with "You Are Not Alone" from HIStory and "You Rock My World" from Invincible. In other words: only 2 tunes from the post-1992 era, and rightfully so, even though the HIStory and Invincible albums are not nearly as bad or mediocre as many would like you to believe. The only track that arguably should be on here (but, at 78 min. already, at the expense of what other track then?) is "Scream", the No. 1 duet with sister Janet.

In the end, this "essential" compilation is better than any other compilation available (HIStory Vol. 1; Number Ones, etc.) as it covers both the Jackson 5/Jacksons era and his solo output. It's very strange to me that this was released without any hype or advertizing campaign, but the main thing is that it's out and available. Hihgly recommended!

Yesterday. I enter Circuit City at Union Square in NYC with my wife, who is from Japan, and this DVD is on three modestly sized plasma TVs a the top of the escalator--which is crowded with mesmorized viewers.

We could not help it. The show was so awesome that we found ourselves standing there, entranced.

My wife put it correctly when she said to me in Japanese, "Whatever he does in life, people will always be facinated with his performances," meaning no matter what freakish things he does to or with his body, it just plain wont effect the fact that he truly is the King of Pop (though I must then appoint Prince as the Emperor of Pop--sorry Michael).

That really summed it up; we were watching one of the all time great masters of performance, and indeed were lucky to be alive when his career was in full swing.

Michael Jackson is one of the all time greats--like Harry Houdini, Fred Astaire, Jimmy Hendrix, or Miles Davis. He's a master of the stage, and--though I protest with myself--has a fantastic musical ability that can't help but mesmorize.

On this DVD, there is of course a lot of lip synching. This isn't so much a music concert as a stage show. And as a stage show, it's one of the greatest of all time. Just seeing Jackson dance to his own music is worth your money.

*****There was one musical break that was facinating, though it wasn't performed by Jackson. At one point in the performance, he shares the stage with a solo guitarist--apparrently just for effect--but the guitarist completely takes over the stage. Jackson points him out to a stage hand, who tries to stop the solo, and the guitarist just keeps going with a fantastic, mad, crazy solo.

It's pretty rare to see a solo like that unless you're in the biz. I immediately thought of Mike Stern--who this was not--totally dominating the show. Jackson should have let him go a bit longer, but instead started the next bit and had the guitarist's plug pulled.

Bottom Line: I suppose that says a lot about Jackson's way of performing--he's a perfectionist; it's all planned out, and it follows the plan exactly. Other performers would have played counterpoint to that solo (as the guitarist was starting to do when Jackson 'interrupted), shared the limelight, and acknowledged that this is what musical performance is really all about--that there's really no such thing as a solo artist, unless of course you're Michael Jackson.

Anyway, I can't help but give this DVD 5 stars on sheer greatness.

This is a review of the VHS video "Michael Jackson: Video Greatest Hits HIStory" Vol. 1. Whether or not you are a fan of Michael Jackson, this is an essential video because it shows how good music videos can be. BILLIE JEAN is a striking video that broke down color barriers on MTV; THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL has a loose improvisational feeling to it which makes it fun to watch; BLACK OR WHITE is modern masterpiece complete with morphing and the controversial "panther dance" sequence. In the original version of this video, Michael smashes in a car windshield that has racist grafitti on it... he is fighting back against the racism. However, in the version included on this tape, the grafitti is edited out, so we just see Michael smashing a window for no apparent reason. Even so, the video is still an amazing experience! ROCK WITH YOU takes us back to 1980 before Michael's plastic surgery; BAD and BEAT IT include some of the best choreography even seen in music videos, although the version of BAD on this tape is the short version, not the full version with Wesley Snipes. This tape also includes the videos for Thriller, Remember The Time, Don't Stop Till You Get Enough and Heal The World in their entirety. This video is a powerful mix of music, dance, and film. Even if you don't think Michael is the King of Pop, this collection proves he is the King of VIDEO!

This director’s cut of Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music, released to coincide with the 40th anniversary of that legendary concert event, has to be one of the most impressive Blu-Ray releases of 2009 or any other year--and that’s even before you put the discs in your player. The box is designed to resemble a faux fringe jacket (with an iron-on patch attached), and inside are all manner of shiny bells and whistles, including a lucite paperweight with images from the event, a reprint of LIFE Magazine’s original festival feature, and reproductions of various Woodstock memorabilia, right down to notes left by concertgoers ("Please meet me in front of stage. I have your insulin pills") and a three-day ticket to the event. And hey, if you’re looking for subtitles in Finnish, Thai, or Polish, you’ve come to the right place.

The movie itself now weighs in at nearly four hours long, and is presumably the way director Michael Wadleigh wanted it in the first place. The Blu-Ray transfer is definitely an upgrade, as is the soundtrack, which was originally recorded on 8-track tape under less-than-ideal conditions. (Using modern digital technology, audio engineer Eddie Kramer, who was hunkered down in what passed for a recording booth at the Woodstock site, has painstakingly restored the soundtrack--even bringing in some of the musicians to re-play their original parts, as on Santana’s “Evil Ways,” one of the previously unreleased bonus performances. Considering that the event is something of a sacred cow by now, this trick may strike some as blasphemous. Then again, this is hardly the first time that a live concert recording has been sweetened, re-recorded, or otherwise enhanced. In fact, it'd be hard to find one that wasn't. And the additions would have gone largely unnoticed if we hadn't been told about them.) In the end, though, there’s only so much improvement possible, and Woodstock was never about technical brilliance anyway. Nor was it mostly about the music, either. Nor was it mostly about the music, either. There are some terrific performances, from acoustic numbers by Richie Havens and Crosby, Stills & Nash to powerful electric contributions from Santana, Sly & the Family Stone, and Joe Cocker. But the truth is that Monterey Pop, which happened two years earlier, was the more exciting concert, and of the several artists who appeared on both bills (including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Who, Jefferson Airplane, and others), all of them made better music at the California festival. But Woodstock was always less a concert than an overall cultural happening, and Wadleigh and his crew, often employing an effective split-screen technique, do a superb job of corralling and conveying the remarkable atmosphere and spirit of it; you didn’t have to be there to recognize that this was the zenith of the Age of Aquarius (it was also the twilight; with Altamont looming, things would never be this peaceful and idealistic again).

Of principal interest on the second disc will be two hours of additional musical performances, including both additional tunes by those who are in the main feature and appearances by five artists who for various reasons (ego, money, quality, time) never made it into the film at all; of the latter, Creedence Clearwater Revival is excellent, Paul Butterfield and Johnny Winter are good, Mountain is mediocre, and the Grateful Dead, with an interminable (38 minutes!) "Turn on Your Love Light," are awful (a special Blu-Ray-only feature lets users organize this material as they see fit). Meanwhile, "From Festival to Feature," a new, hour-long look at the making of the movie, is absorbing and minutely detailed. Huge rancid fan for years now. Ive seen em a few times and this record is awesome. There is soo much diversity on it. I ordered this from machete and for 25 bux I got the 3 disc set, t shirt, bandana, guitar picks, the 3 posters, a sticker, and a roots radicals cd single....WOW. Any other band this set would of been 50 bux or something.

One of the great rock albums (let alone punk)of all time - keeping Rancid as one of the true greats of punk along with The Clash. The wait has been well worth it, with none of the staleness often associated with bands that have been around (too) long - Rancid has managed to keep the energy to create an album that probably surpasses "wolves", "Indestructible" and "life Won't Wait" - I'll decide for sure when I'm as familiar with the songs as I am with previous cds. Stand out tracks (could be just about any) but i love 'Civilian Ways', 'Disconnected' and 'Liberty and Freedom'. The acoustic cd is a great extra.

Secret, Profane and Sugarcane by Elvis Costello

The record was produced by T Bone Burnett and recorded by Mike Piersante during a three-day session at Nashville's Sound Emporium Studio.

Joining Costello were Jerry Douglas (dobro), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Mike Compton (mandolin), Jeff Taylor (accordion) and Dennis Crouch (double bass), some of the most highly regarded recording artists and musicians in traditional American country music, Bluegrass and beyond.

The album includes ten previously unrecorded songs. "Sulphur to Sugarcane" and "The Crooked Line", were co-written with T Bone Burnett while, "I Felt The Chill" marks Costello's second recorded songwriting collaboration with Loretta Lynn.

Costello revisits two songs from his catalogue in string band style. Both songs were originally written for Johnny Cash. "Hidden Shame" was indeed included on Cash's album, "Boom Chicka Boom".

The album title makes reference to "The Secret Songs", Costello's unfinished commission for the Royal Danish Opera about the life of Hans Christian Andersen.

Seeking a new connection from the author to the Anglophone world, Costello wrote about the Andersen's relationship with the world famous singer, Jenny Lind in "She Handed Me A Mirror" and "How Deep Is The Red".

"She Was No Good", relates some of the chaotic details of Lind's famous "All-American" concert tour of 1850, which was promoted by P.T. Barnum. In its aftermath, "Red Cotton" imagines Barnum reading an Abolishionist pamphlet, while manufacturing cheap souvenirs of the adventure.

These four episodes were newly adapted for the instrumentation of this record.

Indeed these are first Costello compositions to be predominantly rooted in acoustic music since his 1986 album, "King Of America", which was produced by T Bone Burnett. He also produced the 1989 album, "Spike".

T Bone adds his distinctive Kay electric guitar to several of numbers, the only amplified instrument on the recording.

Jim Lauderdale takes the close vocal harmony part throughout the record and Emmylou Harris contributed a third vocal part on the chorus of "The Crooked Line" on the final day of recording.

The record concludes with the waltz, "Changing Partners", a song made famous by Bing Crosby.

The cover artwork of "Secret, Profane & Sugarcane" is an ink drawing by the renowned cartoonist, illustrator and author, Tony Millionaire.

Elvis Costello first recorded in Nashville with George Jones in 1979 and returned to the city for "Almost Blue", his 1981 album of classic country covers.

He returned to the city in 2004 to record a duet rendition of "The Scarlet Tide" with Emmylou Harris.

This song, co-written with T Bone Burnett, received an Academy Award nomination for Alison Krauss' rendition in the motion picture, "Cold Mountain" in 2003.

Do you remember his collaborations with Burt Bacharach? With Allen Toussaint? With Anne Sophie von Otter? Or hooking up with T-Bone Burnett for some of those rootsy string-band settings that proved popular for Robert Plant & Alison Krauss?
Well, on this one, the master of re-invention is back on familiar ground, back to Nashville.
Elvis Costello and T-Bone Burnett first crossed acoustic guitars in 1984 in the guise of the Coward Brothers. and they hit the road as duo.
Twenty years after their last performances as a duo, Costello and Burnett reunited for a set at a 2006 San Francisco bluegrass festival.
They were backed by three stalwarts of the genre, all Burnett regulars: fiddler Stuart Duncan, mandolin player Mike Compton and standup bassist Dennis Crouch. Two years later, the three pickers, along with dobro virtuoso Jerry Douglas, gathered in Studio A at Nashville's righteously old-school Sound Emporium - where Burnett and his brilliant engineer Mike Piersante had cut the soundtracks to "O Brother, Where Art Thou?", "Cold Mountain" and "Walk The Line", along with Robert Plant & Alison Krauss' modern-day classic Raising Sand.
"Secret, Profane & Sugarcane", Costello's first country album since King of America was recorded in just three days. T Bone Burnett (who helmed Costello's 1986 album, "King of America" -- and, less memorably, 1989's Spike) is in the producer's chair.
Emmylou Harris adds her burnished alto to one song that Burnett co-writes, "The Crooked Line" and the band is made up of top-rank country and bluegrass session men.
On this album we are far from the siren lure of Plant & Krauss's harmonies. But the result is equally intriguing.
This collection of songs is more rootsy than 1981's Almost Blue. Costello's dalliance in fiddly, old-time country music almost feels like a return to base camp. The tracks are predominantly acoustic but retain a fiercely contemporary feel despite being drenched in bluegrass traditions.
Costello's at times strained honk is warmed by the close harmonies of Jim Lauderdale and set against exquisite mandolin, soaring fiddle, double bass and accordion.
There are many nods to the country-music establishment -- songs originally composed for the late Johnny Cash, one co-written with Loretta Lynn -- but this is essentially music of the moment.
"Down Among the Wine and Spirits", "How Deep Is the Red" and "Sulphur to Sugarcane" - the latter is another Burnett co-write in the spirit of Cash's "I've Been Everywhere" - all speak of a man securely in touch with his muse.
On the title refrain of "How Deep Is The Red" and the following "She Was No Good", a pair of art songs from Costello's 2005 Hans Christian Anderson commission for the Royal Danish Opera - the effect might sound lugubrious, with no impetus and not memorable, despite the impeccable execution.
"Red Cotton", the last of the Andersen songs, is the most gripping ballad entry, functioning as a sort of sequel to Randy Newman's "Sail Away", while "Changing Partners", which Costello learned from a Bing Crosby record, closes the album on a classic note". - Uncut
There's no flash and filigree here, just the reassuring sound of solid craftsmanship unselfishly placed in the service of deft narratives of ordinary lives, shot through with extraordinary emotion.
According to some, the album is a little too languid, too cluttered and the songs rarely catch fire.
Truth is: playing it so unusually safe is no bad thing for Costello, his songwriting remains impeccably tight and this is an album, full of good stuff and reveals a host of immediately enjoyable songs.
Highlights: "Down Among the Wines and Spirits", "Hidden Shame", the delightful "Sulphur To Sugarcane" and the magnificently wordly "My All Time Doll", delivered by Costello with restrained intensity.

This pleasant little trifle will sound more than a little familiar to those who grew up with top40 radio in the mid/late 60s. Takes bits of The Byrds, a sitar, even a tiny nod to Herman's Hermits ("There's a Kind of Hush", shh), all sung in earnest sincerity.

As on The Mighty Wind soundtrack (which has some of the same musicians), their satirical digests of many songs often sound better than the music of the time.

This song sounds to me like what The Beatles would have sounded like if they came out in 2003 rather than 1963. Great song, especially for free.
Pop music isn't supposed to be complex or life-altering. 'Energy' is fun, simple, repetitive. It's got a catchy melody that's hummable, the lyrics don't make me think too hard (I have other music for that!) and it's all performed well. If this had come on my car stereo this morning, I'd have turned it up, not off.

And with album names like 'New Magnetic Wonder' and 'Her Wallpaper Reverie' it seems like their other six or seven albums are worth looking into

First of all, let me just say that I am NOT one of those sycophants who automatically give anything by Dave Matthews Band five stars and just rave about how they're the best and anything they do is just the greatest thing ever. While I don't think "Stand Up" and "Everyday" were as bad as some of the reviews I've read, those albums were obviously not their best work. So I was anxious (and a little nervous) to see what this album would bring.
I needn't have worried; Dave Matthews Band are back with a vengeance. There is an energy, a vibe, a passion, a groove that is present on this album that had been missing on the stuff that followed "Before These Crowded Streets". I've read that there were tensions in the band over the last couple years, and that at one point they were on the verge of breaking up. If that's the case, I guess it's true that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. After "Grux", a prelude showcasing since-departed saxophonist LeRoi Moore, the album kicks right into "Shake Me Like a Monkey", a flat-out rocker that allows the whole band to shine. After that, the album never really lets up; other stand-out tracks include "Funny the Way It Is", "Why I Am", "Alligator Pie" and "Seven". There are others great songs too but I've only listened to the album once so I haven't tied all the titles to all the songs yet.
Bottom line: if you've ever liked Dave Matthews Band at any point in their history, you will really like this album. They've got their fire back, and they know it: I watched the show they did at the Beacon Theatre in NYC last night, and you can really tell they love these songs and are having fun playing together again. Pick this album up, and I promise you won't be disappointed.

2009 release, the Punk trio's long-awaited eighth studio album,. The album is the best-selling trio's first studio album since 2004's two-time Grammy Award-winning Punk Rock opera American Idiot, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart, spawned five hit singles, and went on to sell more than 12 million copies worldwide. 21st Century Breakdown is divided into three acts: "Heroes and Cons," "Charlatans and Saints," and "Horseshoes and Handgrenades," and follows a young couple, Christian and Gloria, through the mess and promise of the century so far. Songs include "Know Your Enemy", "21 Guns", "East Jesus Nowhere", "Before the Lobotomy", and "Restless Heart Syndrome."

I had a hard time accepting this new album, as I loved American Idiot and didn't think it could be topped . . . further, I wasn't too excited about the whole "Christian and Gloria" narrative, etc. But I've found that, with repeated listens, the songs have really grown on me. And the narrative is so loose, and Christian and Gloria are referenced so infrequently, that there were times when I forgot I was listening to a "rock opera." This album is not as fun as American Idiot, it is more contemplative and introspective. And, with a few exceptions, it doesn't have the light-heartedness of earlier Green Day material. That's why you have to give it some time. The guys wanted to do something a little different (heck, they've been at this for 20 years). I personally feel like this album came from the heart, and that's why I listened to it two to three times to let it grow on me before making up my mind about it.

The following songs are my favorites:
1) Horseshoes and Handgrenades. I think this song has the most menacing "f$#k you" energy of any Green Day song ever. East Jesus Nowhere is also quite good, for similar reasons.
2) Last Night on Earth. I'm not usually one for ballads, but this one is very beautiful. It was written by Billie Joe for his wife . . .
3) 21st Century Breakdown. This hook grows on you, it has a sunny, grooving quality to it even though the lyrics are kinda pessimistic.
4) "Before the Lobotomy" also starts out as a serious ballad . . . again, not my favorite type of music usually. The track morphs into something else and then the ballad material returns, but set to a backbeat and distorted guitars. It sounds very powerful at the end.
5) Restless Heart Syndrome . . . another haunting ballad that improves with each listen.
6) 21 Guns. This has a great "everyone put your lighter in the air" vibe. I think this will sound excellent live.

There were other good moments on the album, too. I'm just getting too tired to type more :) And, at the risk of beating you over the head with a stick . . . give this album 2-3 listens and let the material sink in. You will be glad you did.

I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Maiden at the LA Forum in February '08, their first US stop on this tour and also the setting for the Number of the Beast live footage. I also saw them on the summer '08 US tour, in Phoenix. Although my copy of Flight 666 is in the mail right now, I, too, saw it on VH1 Classic over the weekend, and can say that it captures the intensity and sound of the live performances (as much as can be, that is), and all the backstage and tour footage and interviews add to the experience. If you're interested in an amazing band of professional, mature musicians, and how they've stuck to their guns for over 30 years, 14 studio albums, and numerous tours, buy this.

It's no wonder that they can still blow away bands less than half their age: they're obviously clear on what's most important, which is writing music about which they are passionate, and delivering it to fans as best they can; there's no puking, bloated old rock star behavior here. I thought it was funny to see Lars Ulrich, who is younger than these guys, chattering backstage at the LA show, looking like a tired old drunk...add to that Kerry King of Slayer, also at that show, who looks like he swallowed the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man...and contrast them both with Dave Murray and Nicko McBrain playing golf, or Adrian Smith fishing, while on tour -- and still bringing the house down every night. All of these points come through clearly in the documentary, through footage of the band on and off stage, and interviews with them and their road crew. Another outstanding documentary by Sam Dunn.

The name alone conjures up images of unbridled destruction, merciless warlords and ruthless terror. A place where nobody--children, the elderly, religious figures--is safe from the atrocities of war, and where the idea of "childhood," where 8-year olds handle AK-47s like toys, exists in chronological terms alone. When Forbes magazine recently unveiled their "Most Dangerous Destinations," Somalia--above Iraq and Afghanistan--topped the list.

But it's also "The Nation of Poets," where a poem can both inspire peace and end wars. Where every weekend, regardless of the climate, one can find a play or concert at a local theatre.

Growing up, it was both of these Somalias that informed musician/emcee K'naan Warsame, whose sophomore album, Troubadour, is released this February. The grandson of Haji Mohamed, one of Somalia's most famous poets, and nephew of famed Somali singer Magool, the emcee is creating his own musical path through reggae, funk, pop, soul and, above all, hip-hop.

Recorded primarily in Kingston, Jamaica, at the legendary Tuff Gong studios and Bob Marley's home studio, Troubadour is a hip-hop album like no other. With contributions by Damian Marley, Mos Def, Chubb Rock, Vernon Reid, and Adam Levine (Maroon 5), K'naan successfully blends samples and live instrumentation for a sound that's rooted in both traditional African melodies and the classic hip-hop tradition.

It would be easy to brand K'naan with the "political rapper" tag. But that'd be both easy and disingenuous. K'naan's lyrics lie in stark contrast to emcees that use their medium as a pulpit to promote their beliefs. "My job is to write just what I see / So a visual stenographer is who I be," he rhymes in "I Come Prepared." Doubtless, K'naan is not without his opinions, but songwriting always comes before sermons.

On Troubadour, events like these don't need to be glorified or exaggerated for the sake of art. "I think there are some people that are struggling in 'hoods [in Canada and America], but it is so much harder and so much more violent [in Somalia]," says K'naan. "If you want to be like, 'I'm from the hood. We got it rough. We got gats,' I think you should know the alternative exists. I'm speaking in the same language of hip-hop which decidedly speaks about rough neighborhoods. So if there is a place for rough neighborhoods, then here comes the Mother of Rough Neighborhoods."

Troubadour represents the sum of these experiences and more. Having spent the better part of the last two years on the road, soaking in everything from Bob Dylan to Fela Kuti to Talib Kweli, K'naan here releases the sonic document of an artist who has a lot to share now, but clearly a lot more to come. For anyone who's said that hip-hop has nothing left to say, Troubadour proves that it all depends on where you look.

Morrissey will release "Years of Refusal" in the US February 17, 2009 on Attack/Lost Highway. "Years of Refusal" will be Morrissey's first studio album since 2006's UK #1 "Ringleader of the Tormentors". In February, Morrissey will begin the US leg of his world tour that includes rare intimate club dates.

The late Jerry Finn, who previously worked on 2004's critical and commercial smash "You Are the Quarry", produced "Years of Refusal" which is the last album he worked on. The single "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris", which Morrissey debuted during his sold out 2007 world tour, will precede the album. This great new CD features the soundtrack to one of the country's favorite shows. I've never seen this in New York City, but the Rockettes are touring with their show this year and are coming to my town. Having heard so much about the show from my friends over the years, I immediately ordered tickets. After listening to this CD, I can't wait to see the show. The CD features 11 tracks, ranging from Santa's Gonna Rock and Roll, Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree, and Parade Of The wooden Soldiers, to The Man With The Bag, Toyland Ball and The Nativity, a Christmas Carol medley. There's plenty on this CD to quickly put you in the holiday spirit. The orchestra, as expected, is great and there are over 30 songs in the 11 tracks. There's plenty of dancing and singing. A nice full color brochure is included with the CD providing some background information on the show, which began running in 1933 !! A very welcome treasure to everyone's CD collection. Get it and you'll enjoy it every year.

Ludwig van Beethoven: 9 Symphonien

By general consensus, Herbert von Karajan's first (1963) Beethoven cycle for Deutsche Grammophon is the best of the four (!) that he recorded. The Berlin Philharmonic was in top form, and they had not yet made an artistic fetish out of the bland smoothness that typified the conductor's later recordings of this music (and just about everything else). Karajan's squeaky clean, emotionally cool Beethoven will always be something of an acquired taste, but this set makes the best possible case for it. --David Hurwitz

Foundations Of Funk: A Brand New Bag: 1964-1969

Funk 101, for sure. We may never totally understand how James Brown took his music from the earlier styles of R&B he assimilated to the feverish development of the harder, more modern sound of records ranging from "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" to "Say It Loud-I'm Black and I'm Proud," but here's another chance for us to listen in awe. In addition to long versions of the period's cornerstones, Foundations of Funk offers an alternate take of "Cold Sweat" and live versions of "Licking Stick-Licking Stick" and "Mother Popcorn"--the latter achieving a meltdown that puts the Brown band on the same side of the street as Funhouse-era Stooges. It's refreshing to hear a version of "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" that doesn't reference the arrangement Phil Spector came up with on A Christmas Gift for You four decades ago. Barry Manilow's rendition was inspired by Bing Crosby's 1945 collaboration with the Andrews Sisters. And that pretty much explains where the artist is coming from on the majority of this holiday offering. This is a big orchestrated (and voiced) Christmas album, most of it well suited for delivery on a Broadway stage. Accordingly, the singer picks holiday-themed tunes from the likes of Rodgers & Hammerstein, Sammy Cahn & Jule Styne, Irving Berlin, and Frank Loesser. Then, just to confuse things a bit (this is, after all, someone who had a huge hit with Ian Hunter's "Ships"), Manilow throws in a superb cover of "River," Joni Mitchell's ode to Christmas depression. Everything else is warm and festive, though, including the Manilow-penned title track. The singer's longtime fans will adore this collection. --Bill Holdship

The Alligator Records Christmas Collection

So many talented artists & songs to pick from, so why doesn't this, Alligator's major Christmas showcase, blow me away? I don't like over produced tunes, but much of this is way under produced. If you're looking for a CD that you'll grow more fond of through each passing season, as I was, look elsewhere. Mind you, some of it might grow on you, as it has on me, and granted mine is just one opinion, but I sure don't hear any future classics on here... even though I should be able to, and from a mile away!

Ultimate Soul Christmas

It would be hard to argue that Ultimate Soul Christmas isn't truly the wham-bam collection of soul, R&B, jazz, gospel, blues, and pop it claims to be. Believe it, because its 30 tracks are practically a retrospective of the United States' bedrock African American musical genres framed in a Christmas wreath. While there's lots of old-school crooning from the likes of Luther Vandross, Nancy Wilson, Alexander O'Neal, and others, plus a smattering of Motown and boy bands like Boyz II Men (ironically sounding the most dated), the vocal performances on many tracks are timeless keepers. Have Yourself a Jazzy Little Christmas

There's something for everyone on this wonderfully eclectic recording, which ranges from Oscar Peterson's almost lullaby-like piano on "A Child is Born" to Bill Evans's jazzy piano improvisations (overdubbed) on "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," and Sister Rosetta Tharpe's "O, Little Town of Bethlehem," a full-out, hand-clapping, rocking and stomping Gospel song. Containing both vocals and instrumentals, with arrangements which vary from softly sweet to full-out wailing, this CD is full of delightful surprises to keep the Christmas repertoire fresh.

Three of the songs here feature Ella Fitzgerald. "The Secret of Christmas" and "White Christmas," both of which she sings "pure," are soft, slow ballads filled with sweetness, while "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," with its quick beat, provides a jazzy close-out for the album. Dinah Washington's "Ole Santa" and "Silent Night" take the opposite tack from Ella, as she sings with strength and verve--and absolutely no sweetness! Billie Holiday's "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm," not exactly a Christmas song, features solos by the great Benny Carter on clarinet and Sweets Edison on muted trumpet.

Roland Kirk's "We Free Kings," the most highly improvised song on the album, features Kirk on flute and wailing sax, accompanied by an insistent drumbeat. And my favorite--Jimmy Smith's "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is the greatest version of this song I've ever heard, opening with jazz tuba and drums (and sounding like giants walking), then introducing trumpets and a wonderful Smith organ solo, which soars into the stratosphere. A terrific album for the jazz lover at Christmas time, this CD showcases some of the pioneers of American jazz. Mary Whipple
