Timeless Christmas

I do not give many reviews because I hate to write, but after listening to DMHO in their Timeless Christmas CD, I feel overwhelmed to spread the Joy you will feel after listening, tapping your feet, and snapping your fingers to this new upbeat renditions of Christmas music. All 13 tracks are excellent and done in their own DMHO style. Here the traditional Jingle Bells, Most Wonderful Time Of The Year, Little Drummer Boy, Sleigh Ride, and Joy To The World done in pleasing new versions you never heard before. Little Drummer Boy is more than rum a bum dum, it swings. Like something blusey? Frosty The Bluesman is a horn blowing blue style that gives you feeling good. My favorite track is Jesus Child which starts out on the first note to get you dancing and hand waving and doing the Charleston. Its a little bit Dixie with six minutes of banjo and horns. If you want to hear joyous Christmas music, you will definitely love Timeless Christmas.

Christmas Time Again

Made in USA in 2000, Serial# 06076-86298-2, Playing Time 36:07

I'm by no means a die-hard LS fan, even though I have all 17 of their "official" albums, so this review might sound a bit harsh; but what we've got here is a CD where the band had a good time, and I say that's just fine, but it's still short and a bit weak.

I prefer the songs penned by the band (like the title track) over some of the traditional versions they're attempting to cover: it feels this album was recorded and mixed over a 3-day weekend because it sounds very basic.

Still, if you like everything LS releases unconditionally, you'll probably like this. For me, it's probably the CD I'll play the least often among their catalogue.

Christmas With The Westminster Choir

I must admit, this took a few good listens to really appreciate ALL of the tracks (upity versions of songs like "12 Days of Christmas" always make me chuckle), but this really is a cd of beautiful vocals with carols you don't often hear. A magnificent version of "Carol of the Bells". Enjoy!

Great Joy - A Gospel Christmas

Great Joy has quickly become my favorite Christmas album! The Broadway Inspirational Voices bring so much energy and well, joy, to every song. It also features solos by some great Broadway performers (Gavin Creel, Billy Porter, etc.).

The Muppet Christmas Carol

For right-minded buyers of the reissued Muppet Christmas Carol soundtrack, the odds of disappointment are about as remote as Miss Piggy's chances with Kermit. If you loved the movie, you will love the loopy mayhem of the Muppet Brass Buskers ("Good King Wenceslas"), the cartoonish malice of the black-hearted misanthropes Marley & Marley ("Marley & Marley"), and the hope-swollen harmonies of Tiny Tim and Family ("Bless Us All"), Muppeted here to hilariously humble effect. If, on the other hand, your interest in this disc has more to do with its inclusion in the way-narrow Christmas-record-for-kids category--if the spirit of the season doesn't extend, for you, to the magic of the Muppets--you may want to keep browsing, as it's a soundtrack first (overture, instrumentals, and all) and a Christmas CD second. That's not to suggest you're stuck with an un-fun disc should it land on your holiday stack without a prior screening, though. Miles Goodman's score sweeps and inspires, and certain tracks--"One More Sleep 'til Christmas" and "Fozziwig's Party"--are future classics. (Note to the right-minded: After a misstep on the original release, Martina McBride's version of "When Love is Gone" is back.) -Tammy La Gorce

A Charlie Brown Christmas: The Original Sound Track Recording Of The CBS Television Special

The first time you listen to this disc you will undoubtedly be transported directly back to your childhood. Charles Schulz's Peanuts characters will go toe-tapping and funky-dancing through your mind's eye. Play it a few more times, though (ignoring the dialogue snippets, if you can), and you will begin to truly revel in Guaraldi's wonderful, humorous, deep piano playing. You'll hear why he's such an influence on new age ivory tickler George Winston, but you'll also realize that Winston's holiday music never quite sparkles with the underlying passion, and humor, that twinkles in these grooves. Buy it for the nostalgia--keep it because it will remain one of the most enchanting albums in your holiday collection. --Michael Ruby

Fantasy Records. 1988.
Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas

Not only is The Nightmare Before Christmas one of the best musicals of the past two decades; it may well be Danny Elfman's masterpiece, successfully integrating his main influences (from Cab Calloway to Nino Rota) into a fantastic whole. The first disc of this reissue features the original soundtrack, its songs still teetering between dark humor and poetic flights of fancy; this so-called kids' music is at least as sophisticated and skilled as anything you're likely to hear on Broadway. The second disc includes demo versions of four songs on which Elfman plays and sings everything, and five new covers of some of Nightmare's best-loved songs. Marilyn Manson successfully applies his spooky Weimar-circus style on "This Is Halloween" while Panic! At the Disco's lushly orchestrated take on the same tune is closer to the original. Fiona Apple's poignant "Sally's Song" is enhanced by very nice string charts, and She Wants Revenge does a disco take on "Kidnap the Sandy Claws." Best perhaps is Fall Out Boy's cover of "What's This?" which sounds like an unexpected cross between the Beach Boys and Queen. A highly recommended set. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This Christmas-Songs from the Motion Picture

I haven't seen the movie yet, but the soundtrack was playing at a local bookstore and I had to pick it up.

"This Christmas" is one of my favorite holiday songs. Loved it the first time I heard it from Donny Hathaway. I have at least two other covers of the song, but Chris Brown's faint tremelo is as good as the Hathaway version in its own way. There's this subtle tremelo in his voice that just gives you shivers.

Jordin Sparks' "I'll be home for Christmas" takes a song I normally don't like and turns it into something fine.

B2K's "Jingle Bells" is just plain FUN. Makes you want to get up and dance.

And WHY would anyone want to listen to Kenny G if Boney James was playing "Silent Night." This take with Anthony Hamilton on vocals would best be described as urban gospel jazz. I didn't know Mr. James had a Christmas CD, I suspect it's going to be on my wish list very soon.

Lina's smoking "Santa Baby" might just steam your eggnog.

The reason for my one star deduction is because there are 3 non-holiday songs: "Got to Give it up, Part 1" Marvin Gaye, "Try a Little Tenderness" Chris Brown, and "I never loved a man the way I love you" by Aretha Franklin. While I like all three of these songs and I own them on other collections, I'm cutting them out of the playlist because they detract from the mood. Otherwise, it's a great CD and well worth the money.

The Glorious Christmas Songbook

From School Library Journal
Grade 3 Up-A compilation of the lyrics for 52 holiday songs, from "All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" to "Winter Wonderland." However, in most cases, only a fragment of the music is included. For example, for "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," the music is presented for the words, "You better watch out, You better not cry, Better not pout, I'm telling you why"-and then it stops. This is a perplexing and unforgivable failure in an otherwise attractive book. The charming illustrations were culled from books and magazines of the 1800s and early 1900s, and the selection of songs is nicely varied between traditional carols and popular tunes. However, anyone needing the music will want to look elsewhere.-E.M.

From Booklist
Using illustration sources as varied as a seventeenth-century paintingThe Adoration of the Magiturn-of-the-century postcards, and children's magazines, this songbook combines familiar carols with classic images. Much care has been taken with the book's design. The alternating buff and white pages have a rich look. Each double spread features the song lyrics, a few bars of the music (not always enough if you want to play the song), and a piece of art. Among the songs included are such traditional carols as "The First Noel," "Good King Wenceslas," and "O Holy Night" and such popular tunes as "It's Beginning to Look like Christmas," "All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth," and "Silver Bells." This won't take the place of a book with complete music, but it is an attractive alternative for libraries unable to get enough of Christmas materials. Ilene Cooper

Christmas Carols

Purchased this to do the Children's Church Christmas play and it was exactly what we needed. It has the version with the words to practice with the kids and then the version to play during the actual show with music only so the kids can sing. Highly recommend for this purpose!
